What is Ringette?

Ringette is a Canadian game that was first introduced in 1963 in North Bay, Ontario.  It is now played across Canada and Europe.

Ringette is an energetic ice sport.  It is a non-contact sport emphasizing skating and teamwork.  Five skaters and a goalie are on the ice for each team.  Ringette has elements in common with basketball and lacrosse.  Ringette being an ice sport is similar but quite different from hockey in several ways:

  • Equipment
  • Rules
  • Player Skills

The game is played with a bladless stick and a rubber ring.  Players wear protective equipment and sports skates.  Ringette is often called the Fastest Game on Ice!  One rule that speeds up the game is that a player cannot carry the ring over the blue line.  This rule encourages teamwork, passing and strenghtens positional playing skills.  Also there are no offsides.  Ringette players develop excellent skating skills, coordination and judgement.  Ringette is known for fast passing and agile skating.  Ringette emphasizes player safety.  Penalties are swift for any intentional body contact or raising a stick above the shoulders.  A special ringette facemask prevents eye injuries.  Goalies are protected by a wide crease.
